One more thing done....

WooHoo! I finally figured out how to change the header image based on the time of day too! This has been so much fun, I love learning new things, especially when I can figure out how it works and how to do it myself. :)

Try changing the time on your computer clock to see the different backgrounds, here are the times:

  • 6am
  • 9am
  • 12pm
  • 3pm
  • 6pm
  • 8pm
  • 10am
I may be playing around with the actual background images, mainly the colors, but it is essentially done.

For those who would like to know what I did:

I wanted to make the background image AND the header image change based on the time of the day, I was able to make the background change with no problems, it is done with javascript but I didn't know exactly how to make the header image change too, I finally figured out that I had to make a second javascript for the header image, I was trying to make it all in one set of code, I'm sure there is a way to do it, but I couldn't figure it out, so I just made a second js code for the header image and it worked.

Now if I had an image for the header using the upload feature on Blogger, it would override my image I was trying to add via javascript, if I had no image there, then the space where the header image would go shrinks up (because it thinks nothing is going there) and your header background image gets covered up or just doesn't show.

What I did was to do was make a transparent image (gif) that was the same size as my header image, that's easily done with Photoshop, I uploaded that in the layout/page elements section, that acted like a place card to hold the header space open, but allowed anything that was placed in the header background to show through.

I uploaded all of these images and the javascript code to http://pages.google.com/, this is a free place where you can make webpages, they host the images for free, it's more private then these image hosting sites, and I don't think the image hosting sites will allow you to upload anything but images, no html, no javascript..., anyhoo, with everything there, I can call on my images and javascript from there. Using Photoshop, I created 7 backgrounds, to save on bandwidth, I made the images 100 px wide by 1096 px tall, I made the images repeat side to side but not up and down, and I made them fixed, that means as you scroll down, the background image stays in place, it does not scroll. You can rightclick on the background image (on the side of the page) and choose "view background image" and you will see exactly what the background image looks like.

Next I made 7 header background images, the text, black mountain and my image stays the same, but the background behind it is different in each image., these do not need to repeat or be fixed, it is exactly the same dimensions as the transparent gif so it fits exactly in the header space.

That's all I am going to explain for now, if anyone wants more info, just email me and I'll be more than happy to explain further.

Those Who Helped

Finally got the bugs worked out of the new look, it was lots of work and a lot of frustration at times, but with the help of http://betabloggerfordummies.blogspot.com/ I finally got the final bugs worked out, thanks Vin! Now I will begin the task of transferring the code to my main blog without losing any of my widgets. It should be much easier than the first/last time I completely changed the look of my blog. Here is a list of all the sites where I gleaned information to help make this blog look as it does:

http://betabloggerfordummies.blogspot.com (responsible for making the sidebars go all the way to the bottom of the page, thanks Vin!) Specifically this article.

http://tips-for-new-bloggers.blogspot.com

http://www.bloggerbuster.com/ This site is where I learned how to change the background at certain times of the day, specifically this article.

http://www.bloggerplugins.org/ This is where I got the code for Label Cloud, specifically this article.

Big big thanks to everyone listed above.

The Rabbit sends in a Little Bill

IT was the White Rabbit, trotting slowly back again, and looking anxiously about as it went, as if it had lost something; and she heard it muttering to itself, `The Duchess! The Duchess! Oh my dear paws! Oh my fur and whiskers! She'll get me executed, as sure as ferrets are ferrets! Where can I have dropped them, I wonder?' Alice guessed in a moment that it was looking for the fan and the pair of white kid- gloves, and she very good-naturedly began hunting about for them, but they were nowhere to be seen-- everything seemed to have changed since her swim in the pool; and the great hall, with the glass table and the little door, had vanished completely.

Very soon the Rabbit noticed Alice, as she went hunting about, and called out to her, in an angry tone, `Why, Mary Ann, what are you doing out here? Run home this moment, and fetch me a pair of gloves and a fan! Quick, now!' And Alice was so much frightened that she ran off at once in the direction it pointed to, without trying to explain the mistake that it had made.

`He took me for his housemaid,' she said to herself as she ran. `How surprised he'll be when he finds out who I am! But I'd better take him his fan and gloves--that is, if I can find them.' As she said this, she came upon a neat little house, on the door of which was a bright brass plate with the name `W. RABBIT' engraved upon it. She went in without knocking, and hurried upstairs, in great fear lest she should meet the real Mary Ann, and be turned out of the house before she had found the fan and gloves.

`How queer it seems,' Alice said to herself, `to be going messages for a rabbit! I suppose Dinah'll be sending me on messages next!' and she began fancying the sort of thing that would happen: `"Miss Alice! Come here directly, and get ready for your walk!" "Coming in a minute, nurse! But I've got to watch this mouse-hole till Dinah comes back, and see that the mouse doesn't get out." Only I don't think,' Alice went on, `that they'd let Dinah stop in the house if it began ordering people about like that!'

By this time she had found her way into a tidy little room with a table in the window, and on it (as she had hoped) a fan and two or three pairs of tiny white kid-gloves: she took up the fan and a pair of the gloves, and was just going to leave the room, when her eye fell upon a little bottle that stood near the looking-glass. There was no label this time with the words `DRINK ME', but nevertheless she uncorked it and put it to her lips. `I know something interesting is sure to happen,' she said to herself, `whenever I eat or drink anything: so I'll just see what this bottle does. I do hope it'll make me grow large again, for really I'm quite tired of being such a tiny little thing!'

It did so indeed, and much sooner than she had expected: before she had drunk half the bottle, she found her head pressing against the ceiling, and had to stoop to save her neck from being broken. She hastily put down the bottle, saying to herself `That's quite enough--I hope I sha'n't grow any more--As it is, I ca'n't get out at the door--I do wish I hadn't drunk quite so much!'

Alas! It was too late to wish that! She went on growing, and growing, and very soon had to kneel down on the floor; in another minute there was not even room for this, and she tried the effect of lying down with one elbow against the door, and the other arm curled round her head. Still she went on growing, and, as a last resource, she put one arm out of the window, and one foot up the chimney, and said to herself `Now I can do no more, whatever happens. What will become of me?'

Luckily for Alice, the little magic bottle had now had its full effect, and she grew no larger: still it was very uncomfortable, and, as there seemed to be no sort of chance of her ever getting out of the room again, no wonder she felt unhappy.

`It was much pleasanter at home,' thought poor Alice, `when one wasn't always growing larger and smaller, and being ordered about by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I hadn't gone down that rabbit-hole--and yet--and yet--it's rather curious, you know, this sort of life! I do wonder what can have happened to me! When I used to read fairy tales, I fancied that kind of thing never happened, and now here I am in the middle of one! There ought to be a book written about me, that there ought! And when I grow up, I'll write one--but I'm grown up now,' she added in a sorrowful tone: `at least there's no room to grow up any more here.'

Deer

A couple of days ago, something odd happened, usually the whitetail deer are very skittish around people, if they hear, see or smell you, their tail goes up and they bound away. I was up on the west deck and I noticed a whitetail standing on the ground, it looked up at me but didn't run away. I slowly went into the house and got some crackers, I came back out, expecting the deer to run away at each movement and sound I made. Instead of running off, the deer stayed put, I threw a cracker down at its feet, I expected it to run away, but it started munching down on the cracker. A few minutes later, another whitetail appeared, I threw more crackers and they happily munched away.

A short time later, some mule deer walked up, I didn't know what either group would do, they seemed sort of OK with each other, a little skittish but no one ran away, at least not at first, I threw more crackers down and each group munched on them, eventually the bigger mulies scared the more dainty whitetails away, but not too far, they stayed around to finish off their snack.

This is the first time I saw both whitetail and mule deer together in such close quarters, they usually stick to their own, though there is some interbreeding going on, occasionally you will see a herd of mulies running around and one of them will have smaller than normal ears, I haven't seen as many whitetails so I don't know if the breeding goes the other way as well, though I'm sure it can and probably does.

It was interesting to see the two of them together, that gave me the opportunity to see the differences between them. Their coloring is a bit different, the whitetails have a reddish coat, the mulies have more buff coloring. The tails are different, the whitetails have, well, fluffy white tails, the top is the normal coat color, the underside is fluffy white, the mulies have a less fluffy tail, and it's mostly black. They are about the same size height wise, the mulies are bulkier, they have bigger heads and much bigger ears, their necks are a bit bigger. The whitetails are much more delecate, they have a slender head, much smaller ears and a more slender neck. Both have just about the same leg size (length and width), the feet/hooves looked similar, and the body size is about the same, if there is any difference there, then the mulies would have a bit more bulk. The mulies seem to be the more aggressive of the two, of course this could be because the mulies were young males, had they all been females, it might have been different.

test blog

This is my secondary test blog, I want to start from scratch and build this blog to learn more about how they are constructed. Right now, it's just a plain template, I want to delete all of the code and start from a blank page, it may take me a while to get it going because I am focused on my primary test blog.
